As an example of how these children do academically, here is an idea. There are maybe 95 middle school children grades 6-8. Only 8 of these children can read at a 5th grade level and only 2 can read at a 6th grade level. The majority read at about a 1st or 2nd grade level. It is sad and it makes teaching them hard. The k-3 kids going through the Yup'ik Immersion program are not learning to read and write in English unless their parents teach them at home because they only learn Yup'ik.
I am really thankful that my brother and I have great parents who care about us, take care of us, etc. There are so many sucky parents here and it gets to me. That is why so many grandparents adopt these children. The parents just suck and are too interested in home brew instead of their kids. They let their kids go hungry, run around in -15 windchill with no coats because they do not give them one, let little kids stay up all night running around town, give their children chewing tobacco, etc. So many do not really care about their children's education or if the children misbehave in school. Just about everyone here gets food stamps. That is the favorite day of the month for kids, when food stamps come in. It is sad teaching the younger kids because they always say they are so hungry and beg for snacks, which most teachers do provide from their own money.
