I wanted to coach cheer-leading last year but the posting vanished and no one seemed to know about it. So i just gave up. This year I am going to try again because I have heard that they still have cheer-leading, just no one to coach. I think I could do it. The girls are not as advanced as some high schools, but they have fun. I even know some Warrior cheers since my high school mascot has the same name as our school here. Plus my friend said that the older girls could help me and help out. So here is hoping they still have a position!
The thing I am most interested in though is starting a Girl Scout troop. Probably Brownies though because I think that age might be best with the kind of activities we can do here. Of course I wish we could do lots of ages, but do not think that could work well. I would have help from my friend, who is an elementary school teacher. I need to apply and send in references. I am just seeing if anyone else was going to start up a troop. if so, then maybe I could just help them. But we need positive activities for youth. One major obstacle is, we would need a GoFundMe page for donations because the kids are not going to be able to pay the $20 fee to join or buy a uniform, not even a sash. Plus there are good books for the kids. The Girl Scouts come for a week in the summer and the girls just love it! The boys get jealous, because boy scouts do not come.
We want someone to start up boy scouts, but not as lucky. My boyfriend wants to, I just do not think he has the time with his Graduate studies. Hard to say right now. It has been a brutal few weeks for him in school, but unsure what kind of class load he will have during the school year. He already does Yearbook, volunteers at games, and does Library Night.
We are also starting the open library nights back up, to encourage reading. It kind of failed last year with no one coming. This year we are adding stuff like crafts (beading, weaving, etc) and maybe movies that came from books, and have the books available for the kids to read. Plus story time, and other activities. Anything to get people in the door and looking at books. Plus it keeps kids out of trouble and gives them someone warm and safe to go to. I think if we do it one week night and one weekend, it will work better for everyone. Open library was mainly organized by me, my boyfriend, and my friend who I mentioned earlier. We had one teacher who was willing to read to kids, but no one ever showed up. Hopefully he will still want to read stories.
