Anyways, I think I am getting paid as a Substitute, even though I have not done it yet. Just found out what I am being paid an hour and it is like $5 more than my last employer.
The school principle personally came over to me to make sure I knew about the Librarian/Media Center position. That is a good thing. Interview on Tuesday now.
Today was good. I spent time with the Yupik kindergarten class. Thankfully they spoke english as well. I guess the school district prefers they speak mostly Yupik, actually, but the teachers do both to get the point across. Books and songs are all in Yupik though. I was trying to learn Yupik words based on the signs around the room. Even the kids are required to use their Yupik names, not their school English names. So now I am unsure of the Yupik name of the girl I worked with since she kept writing her other name. But I hung out with the girl and made sure she got her special lunch and that no one got her sick with her food allergies. Also made sure no one hurt her. And i had kids climbing on me and hugging me. I ended up staying later to help with gym and I helped my student with her numbers and coloring. It was a good day.
The kid who was suppose to come over for dinner did not because he was dancing at the cultural event at school. So we ate dinner and then went to the school. There was native dancing and drum playing by both kids and elders, and some of the teachers joined in. There was also cloth for Kusbuks being cut and fitted by a teacher for the kids who got a ticket. The kids took home the pieces to sew together for the Kusbuk. There was also harpoon making for the kids with brass tips. I wanted to make a harpoon! I had no idea how much work goes into filing the brass down to make a point. Insane!
