People are starting to head to berry camp. ATV's pulling wagons of camping supplies are heading out. I see packs of children marching towards the tundra. From talking to natives, they drive for maybe 7 hours to berry camp and gather gallons and gallons of berries during a week. Over the weekend women picked 2-3 gallons of berries. I feel like a slacker with my little pint! But they also had kids who could spend all night cleaning the berries. I am limited to a small area because I am afraid of just wandering the tundra alone on foot, and families go out together for a week at a time. I tried to go out tonight but I ran into the pack of children. I am unsure if they are staying in this area or if they are heading out far away. I have not driven by to see. I will just get my tiny bit at a time and eventually have a frozen stash of berries. That is assuming I do not eat all the salmonberries before then, because once they are ripe they are delicious! I put one ripe berry in the ziploc and another in my mouth. Over and over. Yummy!
